Today, we had Aboriginal presenter Deni Paquette visit our classroom! She shared with us about her Metis background and the importance of the Metis sash. The sash was used as a toolkit for the Metis in the fur trade and later the pemmican trade. Apart from being used as a piece of clothing, it could be used as rope for securing a load, a trump-line to carry load of furs, threads for clothing repairs, wash cloth and towel, pillow, belt or a handy pocket! The colours of the sash were also very important. Each colour had a different and important meaning.
Mrs. Paquette taught us how to make a Metis friendship bracelet and we had so much fun creating our own!
